Ana-Grams

imagesCAKL3NK5 You can blame Luke Brattoni, or maybe page 48 of Puzzled, as today’s Storm will prove that less is more. You challenge is to create a two-worded cryptic clue relying on the anagram formula. Not easy when you consider you need to pack three elements: definition, signpost and fodder. To give you a taste:

Shipwreck joints = HIPS
Thicker offenders = DENSER
Windcheater measure = HECTARE

Best if we all present our clues in that fashion. Yes, I know that steals a chance for us to solve your creation, but for reasons of universal admiration – not to mention the judging and the admin – if you could post both your clue and your answer.

Avoid hyphens if you can – as these open the way to blurring the two-word rule. But names and slang and all the rest: go for it.

Not sure how I’ll judge this Storm – shortest clue? Longest answer? Sleekest surface sense? All these categories carry weight, though a deluxe shortlist will keep us all sated. And please, help enrich a likely flood by sending us the cream among your drafts. Something says this will be a feast of fine stuff, and we may need to control the influx.

Last, all Stormers should feel welcome to suggest any deft tweaks to the ideas of others, if there’s the chance of making a good clue spectacular. Here at DA Central, we’re all about the us in bodacious. So get condensing. And may the brevity begin. Deadline is cocktail hour, Thursday.

Unknown Madonna = Anon

Mr X — 16 November at 01:37PM

Here's one open to some improving:

Spineless Monica = Seles

A one-word definition for Ms Seles would be a better fit than her name but "ex-sportswoman" doesn't do it for me.

Mr X — 16 November at 01:39PM

Maybe "Spineless stabbee" but I'm sure someone can do better.

Mauve — 16 November at 01:48PM

I think this is gonna be a big thread, DA...

Mayve dg's gin could be mixing drink ?

Nah. I'm just relying on your own filters, sending in the duck's nuts. And so far, that's working: some wonderful clues.

SK — 16 November at 10:42PM

Don windcheater = teacher
Scorns wilderness = sneers
Sunbeam Mixmaster = stream

...and in the category of gratuitous sucking up to the judges...

ps. Gotta love Sam's shot messenger. Simple, but beautiful.

GymBunnies — 17 November at 12:17AM

And in case we're shortlisting according to the alphabet:

Rex, perhaps!? = Xer

or by shortest answer (and entering SK's new category):

GymBunnies — 17 November at 08:13AM

Apparently "actor" is stretching it as a signpost, so:

Actor's sidekick?! = co-star

Incidentally I'd find it really helpful to have dud signposts outed in the weekend wrap, rather than just omitted from the shortlist, if you have the energy DA?

PRS — 17 November at 09:56AM

Absorbent pigs = boars
incumbent spice = cumin

JD — 17 November at 10:05AM

Veritable mixture= true

Mr X — 17 November at 10:12AM

Apologies if this one's already been done. Considering we must be well into the hundreds of entries, it's easy to overlook one:

Marsala, unfortunately = Alas

Mr X — 17 November at 10:13AM

And I think the "spineless lobster" has aced it.

Mr X — 17 November at 10:21AM

dg — 17 November at 12:00PM

Obviously there's no exact rule for anagrinds. But what is the rule of thumb? From memory the book on cryptics I read 2 decades ago said an indicator shows something like disorder/reordering (e.g. new)/ something's wrong/unusual (e.g. mad, bad, sad, disappointing, camp, odd) or something about letters or characters, 'off' or 'out'.

I couldnt have 'actors','return' or 'pie' and 'mis-','re-' and 'free' are iffy. But it's all so subjective and veering into aesthetics territory. An official 'Cryptic Solvers of the World' rule would be good but (over)restrictive.

Arrrgh. There is no solution. Like a good writer getting their message across you'd hope the same with the setter's anagrinds. Anyway I go by the 'rule' above

SK — 17 November at 02:17PM

Fit gearbox = rage

Redouble down = blue

Yellow-bellied rattlesnake = sneak

SK — 17 November at 02:27PM

rose madder = red

... or madder! = red

and can I get away with:

sweeten sausageroll = assuage

DA — 17 November at 07:05PM

Liking your work, Sam. Though does rot = off? Maybe not. How about:

Bilge torrent (3)

Tripartite wardrobe is excellent, and sausage roll [while ineligible for being a 3-worder] is too good to omit submitting.

As for you, dg - a torrent to transcend bilge. Some modern wonders amid your lists. I'm looking forward to assaying all posts.

As for anaginds [anagram-indicators], it is a subjective area. I've collected some fishy samples over the year, and will put them in a new post next week or so.

and making good use of your vocal antiques link:

directed agonyclite = telic

Sam — 17 November at 10:40PM

following on from one of dg's indicators 'cross' - can 'x' be a shorthand for cross? If so:

nix xenon = none

GymBunnies — 17 November at 10:49PM

still pursuing minimalism:

slippage! = gape

dg — 17 November at 11:08PM

thoroughly smoking = hot
tomorrow's car = motor

dg — 17 November at 11:11PM

cross = angry / confront / hybrid

I don't think 'x' means the same

Sam — 18 November at 07:52AM

dg - though in plant/animal scientific names 'x' indicates a hybrid?

liked your vampire's father/thoroughly smoking very much!

DA — 18 November at 04:46PM

Classy late entries, xobhcnul.

Two more rental ideas:

Apparent father = papa
Transparent spare = spartan

JT — 18 November at 06:07PM

I claim that it is not yet cocktail hour! So:

Inspect eardrum = READ
Transport illegally = GALLEY
Islamabad delicacy = SALAMI

A challenge: devise a clue where the second word, within it, contains a removal indicator. I've just wasted half an hour failing at this, but am sure someone will be up to it. For example: if "Concertndy" was a word (!), then "Concertndy coffin" could clue "trendy" via "Con" (mix) CERTNDY with "C off", meaning "in".

Mauve — 18 November at 06:18PM

I've just wasted half an hour trying to understand your example JT - in a lovely brain-nourishing way of course!

Good luck with your quest!!

dg — 18 November at 07:44PM

Like...

Congaline goutweed = alien
Newscorp scoutmaster = pro

GymBunnies — 18 November at 11:04PM

It's well past Happy Hour and noticed the Spartan's already been captured, but was going to suggest:

dg — 18 November at 11:53PM

Transparent game?

Sam — 19 November at 08:42AM

for the morning after the cocktail hour...

GymBunnies — 20 November at 12:12PM

Apologies for the late post DA, but we couldn't resist dealing one final hand:

(we prefer "Dealcoholises under-age drinkers"...)

Misdealt doctrine = ism

Spoil dealership = perish

harmonise dealings = sing

harmonies! = noise

deallocates sugar = lactose

GymBunnies — 20 November at 12:17PM
