Brain Strain [BB326]

untitled If Cairo, stencil, krill, spork and haka all lead to drawing implements – biro, pencil, quill, chalk, marker – then can you draw on your rhyming talents to figure out what group is disguised in the ten rhymes below? (In each case, from word to rhyme, the syllable count is constant.)

chill
fume
shock
bagel
teacher
mimosa
muscle
taken
whoso
wringer

Can you concoct another rhyming set?

SOLUTION NEXT WEEK
BB325 SOLUTION: Put off, put about, put down, put up, put in, put in/forward, put away, put across, put aside, put upon, put out, put through

As it happens, I can - without too much thought!

Nib — 04 September at 09:38AM

Bagel was the spark catalyst, in my mind.

The muscle rhyme may be a bit dodgy? (a bit more piratical/Devonian?) but why dig a hole.... unless one has buried a body .. (who was the most famous Irish phenomenologist? Merle O'Ponty)

dg — 04 September at 04:05PM

scene
bed
coup
fight
track
harlot
beam
hello
pilot
cons
Scooby
crime
weigh
keel
Clarice
pond
stink
famine
down

I don't have a problem with muscle but I do with mimosa and whoso, although I recognise the anglicised pronunciation. Difficult to find English homophones or rhymes of foreign words... let alone Spoonerisms!

Criseyde — 05 September at 05:00PM

dg, I've looked up a few of my guesses from your list and have an idea. .. did they all end up in the same place?

Nib — 05 September at 11:13PM

dg, Pocahontas is a fan of your weather forecast?

dg — 06 September at 10:27AM

Place? Weather? Would you like me to shed some light?

Criseyde — 06 September at 10:58AM

I found rhymes of names of actors and then discovered that the selection I chose happened to be buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park, LA !

Em — 06 September at 11:58AM

dg, could I add day and custard to your list?

Em — 06 September at 12:36PM

I can't get this list to ten, but hopefully it's enough for a chuckle:

takeaway
punchy
garble
whack
scream

Criseyde — 06 September at 12:37PM

Em, Was looking at spices bay and mustard, but think I get it now. Was wondering if dg had given a hint. Is your 'day' dg's 'weigh'?

dg — 06 September at 02:29PM

Yes, Em, day; mustard; fold; Manila; camber; bran; angrier; forts and girl all fit. This theme is nowhere near as cerebral as it may appear.

Em — 06 September at 05:30PM

Oops, didn't twig to 'weigh'. Apologies, dg: pilot, harlot, Scooby and Clarice were the triggers for me. It's a shame there are three words we won't be able to find rhymes for!

My list is also far from cerebral. It's good for an attack of three-thirtyitis (another TV term?!).

Criseyde — 06 September at 08:30PM

Em, more visceral than cerebral? Could knickers, break and skint be added to your list?

Em — 06 September at 08:55PM

Criseyde, it depends on your brand loyalties! But yes, right theme. I'm currently enjoying some Portobello for dessert.

Criseyde — 06 September at 08:59PM

Em's list initially gave me the idea for:
renter
shack
cooker
mop
tanker
