Capital Gains [BB345]
In each case below, X represents the capital of Australian state or territory. Pick the right city, then mix the assigned letters, and you’ll solve each clue. X + SAN = Penrith team (PERTH + SAN = PANTHERS). Each of our cities is used once only. One answer has two words.
(And for those wishing to extend the challenge, why not declare another finite group, and see if you can jumble each member with a few extra letters.)
- X + MO = WC
- X + SNT = had NaCl removed
- X + TER = WC illness?
- X + ALO = glut
- X + GF = belittling
- X + FOE = restraint
- X + HW = integer
- X + SC = irritability
SOLUTION NEXT WEEK
BB343 SOLUTION: AWOL, SCUBA, UNESCO, AIDS, OPEC, WYSIWYG, KISS, LOL, MASH, NIMBY, ROM, PIN, LASER, SWAT, SNAFU (Other acronyms are possible.)

I've got them all
Nib — 15 January at 02:32PM
The Seven Dwarves:
X + RE = saline solution
X + RE = interior design
X + M = catalytic proteins
X + IP = medical condition
X + SCOT = antisocial deviant
X + BL = photographic light
X = SOCK = alabaster (2 words)

For DA's I'm left with Brisbane for 8, which annoyingly doesn't seem to fit.
I've got all of Nib's, they were very amusing (most of the answers were oxymorons or in some way linked to their dwarf's character).
AC — 15 January at 04:26PM
OK, all done, got DA's 8

Perhaps the most cardinal of finite sets - the numbers one through nine (look to 1. to set the tone):
1. X + MOA = Principles of physics
2. X + LAM = "F = m x a"
3. X + NANNIE = If mass is constant
4. X + W = mass times gravity
5. X + LADY + GRIT = Ambient pull between objects (2 words)
6. X + SCOR = The 2nd does this to momentum
7. X + CON = Waves in phase
8. X + SITE = Thought relatively
9. X + RUNT = Neutral particle
When starting from the middle (#5), in each direction the X's read pairwise sum to 10.

Taking inspiration from AC and using the noble gases:
X + NICE = Lack of knowledge
X + A CARP ACT = Drug-related
X + TIC IT = The end
X + ICING = Punter
X + MOOTS = A novel gem?
X + TWISS = Servants' quarters
Boniface — 16 January at 01:10AM
Nice work AC. Or should I say, a super-string!
Lucasta — 16 January at 05:48PM
Should have remembered to specify that the fourth solution has two words.
One Wheel — 16 January at 06:12PM
Lucasta, I've got the lot except for the punter.
DA — 16 January at 08:51PM
Off to chase a rainbow, with no clues if you're game. Pretty sure the answer is unique, with common words throughout.

One Wheel, punter is a prominent Aussie sportsman, first and last name.
PMCD — 17 January at 12:17AM
I think it is sufficient to call these ‘Leaders’. Once you get one, the rest will follow (and I liked the neatness of only adding one letter to each)
+ E = He’s caucasian (2 words)
+ M = Primary producers
+ R = Travelling salesman
+ R = Winning again
+ N = Difficult victory (2 words)
+ I = Priest in the past
+ I = A merry dance
Geoff Bailey — 17 January at 01:05AM
Nice one, PMCD. But doesn't the first one require two E's? And I think your final one was intended to have an A added, rather than an I.
And nice sequel, DA. Took me some time to work out the last of them, but I got there in the end. :)
One Wheel — 17 January at 01:03PM
DA, nice one. I've got all except the JM.
AFL teams eg. Hawks, Tigers
X + DA = chickens
X + SN = wading birds
X + K = crows
X + BERN = rails
X + DE = ducks
X + PT = flocks
X + TO = stoolpigeons
X + OE = cuckoos
X + PEC = swallows
X + DB = birdbrains
DA — 17 January at 02:13PM
That's one mighty zoological list, One Wheel. I may need some quality solving time to identify THAT ladder. Looks a classy achievement.
After so much scrambling, you'll kick yourself for missing my JM clue...
One Wheel — 29 January at 06:35PM
My lot:
X + DA = chickens (crows – cowards)
X + SN = wading birds (pies – snipes)
X + K = crows (swans – swanks)
X + BERN = rails (saints – bannisters)
X + DE = ducks (dogs – dodges)
X + PT = flocks (roos – troops)
X + TO = stoolpigeons (suns – snouts)
X + OE = cuckoos (lions – loonies)
X + PEC = swallows (cats – accepts)
X + DB = birdbrains (giants – dingbats)
DA — 30 January at 09:08AM
One Wheel, that is a stellar list - congratz. Only sorry I let time get the better of me, as so many of your mixtures are 'proper sweet', to use the pidgin.
Love how you keep the bestial motif. Deft work.
