Clues of Winter
Rather than a Storm this week, a clue challenge. Over the coming week I’ll be posting three batches of six clues, all of which have appeared in UK papers over the Aussie winter. Your quest is to solve all six, and then create two new words according to each day’s instructions. Today for instance, you need to mix the six letters appear in these answers' penultimate place, so spelling two words, both six letters in length. And to prove you’ve met the ask, can you conjure up classy clues for those TWO mystery words?
With no prizes involved, or notional podium, treat these sextets as simpatico exercises, where hints and helping hands can be offered. OK – away we go with Clues of Winter 1 –
End of term party (6) [Philistine]
Live wire’s second season of Sex and the City (6) [Biggles]
Two-thirds fly back for exam (4) [Puck]
Bookends made of pine spaced out (10) [Cincinnus]
Pop group I sample – that’s stealing (8) [Times 9039]
Indiscreetly loses every other shade (6) [Loroso]
Now mix the six letters in second-last place – and you’ll create TWO possible words. Now who can craft the best clue for either? (Share your answers and solution murmurs in the Comments.)

Got 'em - a great set of clues. Won't clue yet to avoid spoiling too early.
Criseyde — 06 September at 09:34AM
Have answers for 3,4 and 6.
Possible solution for 1, but involving indirect anagram. Is that the case?
Boniface — 06 September at 09:46AM
@ Criseyde - no. It's one where you know when you've got it. Think about what term could mean.
RobT — 06 September at 09:51AM
1 I have given it's in a UK context
2 is a guess
6 easy peasy
Criseyde is in another sector of the Venn Diagram from me.
Criseyde — 06 September at 09:55AM
Thanks Boniface, at least I know now what 1 is not.
Q about 5. Does the Times allow cluing such as 'that's stealing' to indicate deletion of 'ie' from another word. Could save me from going down another wrong path?
Criseyde — 06 September at 10:00AM
RobT, I could only start with the easy ones... like 3,4, and 6.
Thanks for the UK tip for 1.
Is there a homophone in 2?
Boniface — 06 September at 10:43AM
Here we go then:
A. Wound shutter open, away from soup tureen? (6)
B. The Matrix: True US rubbish (6)
Criseyde — 06 September at 11:10AM
Got yours Boniface. Good ones!
(Now I can work out the other 3 I haven't got. This is like doing the Jumbled words backwards in the Tele after getting the caption on the cartoon, only in this case having the penultimate letter from one of 6 letters, or 5 really. And entirely unnecessary after getting the picture except for a sense of completion!)
Em — 06 September at 11:44AM
A. Youse rest about after surgery
B. First home or vehicle (not ship) of Russ's?
Fix suggestions welcome. A's not quite there, and can I get away with the 'of' in B?
RM — 06 September at 11:58AM
Didn't solve 3 or 6, yet (though others think they're easy!) However, that was enough to get the two words in question (not many pairs of anagrams with that combination of vowels)
A. Stitch us up with true abandon (6)
B. Say, not you and me in foetal position (6)
Criseyde — 06 September at 12:42PM
A Close up, sounds like you like it?
B Speak not with hesitation! (Besides you and me.) The Source
Criseyde — 06 September at 01:04PM
oops, I see my B is not only a mistake but very similar to RM's B - only without the mistake. Will have to redo that.
Boniface — 06 September at 01:09PM
Another crack at B:
B. Computer user group generates issue (6)
Criseyde — 06 September at 01:29PM
How about for a bit of fun
A Uterus stitch?!
B Suture repositioned in caesarean site.
Criseyde — 06 September at 01:35PM
Like it Boniface.
Criseyde — 06 September at 01:49PM
B Outback truck race hothead lost guts.
Mr X — 06 September at 04:11PM
A. Guillotine but insure, then sew up.
B Cute ruse to trap rugrat production centre.
Criseyde — 07 September at 07:53AM
Could I have a hint for 2 and 5 please?
JD — 07 September at 08:01AM
A - Stitch up the hereafter with a super new beginning
B - In which sperm make an absolute rush!
Em — 07 September at 08:07AM
2 is a charade in three parts. The def is not what you might think at first (or second or third) glance. Penultimate letter U. This was definitely the trickiest of the lot for me.
5 - my initial error with 5 was trying to think of actual pop groups. You're after another word for it to put together with the other parts of the clue. Penultimate letter T.
Hope that helps.
Em — 07 September at 08:16AM
A. Stitch doesn't suit ya, I'm told
B. First home or vehicle (not ship) Russ's
Sam — 07 September at 08:21AM
Criseyed, I’m also stuck on these two – struggling to even work out the definition. Thanks for the hint Em, will have another go, but now you have me worried – as I had the ‘T’ coming from clue 6 – so perhaps I have that one wrong…
Criseyde — 07 September at 08:52AM
Em, I thought we'd already had 't' in the penultimate position in 6. I was looking for 'r' and 'u' for 2 and 5.
And with you on the homophone .. my go above was 'Close up, sounds like you like it?'
Thanks for tips .. will have another look.
Criseyde — 07 September at 08:53AM
oops, just read second half of Sam's comment.
Agree, Sam.
Criseyde — 07 September at 09:12AM
Yeay, just got 5, thanks Em.
Sam, as Em says, another name for a group of musicians + I + sample, def stealing/theft.
Penultimate letter is 'r'.
If you get 2 out, can you help me out?
Sam — 07 September at 09:17AM
doh, thanks Criseyed - still stuck on 2 I'm afraid - though wondering if 'the city' is 'ur' at the end...
SK — 07 September at 09:26AM
Pick up copper; model left holding the baby
Stitch up claim over hash habit
Mr X — 07 September at 09:28AM
No. 2 City is the definition. It doesn't involve a homophone although for Australians it might sound like it does (and a risque one at that).
Criseyde — 07 September at 09:44AM
Thanks Mr X - got it now!
Em — 07 September at 10:44AM
Sorry all. Me didn't count so good.
Criseyde — 07 September at 12:37PM
No apologies needed Em. Thanks for the help with 2. After having a good look at Clues of Winter 2 I think I'll be happy to get this far.
KM — 07 September at 02:54PM
A. Sew headless Hutus back, then about
B. "Organ nut gets head chopped off," queen states
SK — 07 September at 05:01PM
Mea culpa. Have been flat out so fired off a couple of dodgy clue ideas above ^ , then just realised I fell fowl to the old indirect anagram ("hash habit" = TUR....I was trying to think of a "reverse" word to pair with habit, nothing came to mind, so I got lazy and stuck in an anagrind without thinking. Note to self...read before submitting)
SK — 07 September at 05:01PM
"Fell fowl"??? Mamma Mia....
SK — 07 September at 05:04PM
I give up. Can't spell or clue today. Apologies.
Some clever stuff and shrewd solving from the crew. Will try to make a contribution tomorrow.
