Cryptopia

index Few shout-outs to deliver this week, with one of our favourite setters – the man they call Anax – appearing in the Guardian blog for a lively Q&A. Worth catching, if only to appreciate how so many of his great clues arise from reworking & reworking. (And also the story about a Brimingham kitten.)

Second is in the same vein, with myself under the griller this time. A bunch of RMIT students invaded the Word Cave in September to make a mini-doco about the dark arts, and a 7-minute Cryptopia is the result. A chance to put faces to the amicable DA Trippers too – Antonios Sarhanis (AS) and Roderick Campbell (RC).

Last up, if you want to see or hear the meme-riddled schtick I recently gave at the Style Council debate, arguing that TV holds the greatest sway over language than any other media (a comic rave that many here helped to enrich), then try this ABC24 link, or the Radio National podcast. (Whichever stream floats your boat.)

Loved the Anax revelations, esp his software and screen v. paper trick

and the Cryptopia segment was brilliantly put together (I dunno about solvers anagrammatically equalling lovers though DA - in both senses) Is that for a TV segment? If so, which show?

DA2 — 17 November at 08:54AM

Yeah, shoulda clarified that with WORD lovers! The doco is a semester project for film study - pretty cool package I thought.

Mr Anax spent lots of time assisting me with my first effort, and put it up on his own blog.
Respect!

I love the muzak on the 'Cryptopia' fillum.

The talking heads too.

Well done all.

Thanks for the links, DA.

What a feast with Anax, DA Trippers and DA et al at the Style Council. Thankyou DA and congrats for winning the debate!

Love 'haikus of deceit' as a description of DA clues.

Liked Julian Burnside's crack about twitters' struggle in getting tweets UP TO 140 characters. Followed by a member of the audience speaking in defence of professional tweeting saying 'if twitter were replacing ....'. Is there room for the subjunctive in 140 characters?

And funny that 'whilst' DA and the panel were speaking about language decay, 'miles' slipped through to the keeper - the land of vuvuzelas being 11,000 miles away. Speaking of cricket in SA - gotta go. Might need a clue tomorrow.

I used to use those Looney Toons notebooks; haven't seen them for years.
Some entertaining bandwidth fodder there, DA.

Style Council gig from Spooner's papers -- played ball perfectly with what sounds like Sean Connery's weapon (4-7,7)

Bona fide storms in Melbourne have prevented any uploading today. Look for our own Storm results soonish.

I am trying to track down a novel (for a Xmas present) I once read with a cryptic crossword theme- the title of the book was a cryptic clue and I think the answer was 'rebelled'so the title had a words for red, girl and resistance- I think. Love Fridays now as I am achieving some success- many thanks.

Janene, your quest got me intrigued, so I googled around and came up with " Pretty Girl in Crimson Rose" by Sandy Balfour. There is a blurb about it in the Guardian and it sounds like a good read - may have to put it on my Xmas list!

A memoir, not a novel, and well worth the saunter. Thanks for the legwork JD.
