Foxing Flies [BB304]
Each set of paired of clues can be answered by two phrases that contain the ceNtral cluster of ING – with one SMALL CATCH. The familiar phrase of Answer 1 will become the new phrase of Answer 2 as soon as you swap the marginal clusters astride the ING-centre. Sounds confusing? Let’s try a few examples:
Runway/deforestation = landing strip/stripping land
Still stumped? Try this one: Fruit bat/duping Louie? = flying fox/foxing fly. (As you can see, no mixing is involved, and sometimes the second phrase will be a droll invention.) Enough blather. Let’s play –
- Butchery slab/breakwater role
- Bordello/mall mishap?
- Casino/real estate?
- Boxcars/selling bread
- Horse holder/mail strike?
- Cattle marker/Sunbeam
- Tearing strips off/stripping?
- Gridiron player/pro-series

27. Heavy strike / getting lucky?
That was the first one I thought of, but figured I better not lead with it, on grounds of dubious taste.
DA — 04 April at 08:42AM
Beat me to the punch, DC. And I think the time is right to spurn the Spoiler Alert, and starting naming names, since a few of these outstanding clues could be standing out for a while.
10 browning off/offing Brown?
17 bargaining chip/chipping bargain [this does intro the idea of a spelling shift too, as with Rupert's falling star in 26]
22 typing pool/pooling type [careful of getting the case right in the clue, which would be fairer as font-sharing - yes?]
A few more to go. These can be brain ticklers.
RK — 04 April at 08:45AM
19. counting crows/crowing counts?
Rupert — 04 April at 08:52AM
19. cc (numerate birds)
Rupert — 04 April at 08:58AM
RK beat me to #19 (I was in a meeting, and forgot to refresh).
26 was intended as falling rock / rocking fall, not star/starring.
22. Sorry - font-sharing would indeed be a fairer clue.
Rupert — 04 April at 09:11AM
27. I'm pretty sure it's "hit", but I'm stuck on king hit/hitting k, and I don't think the latter means anything.
28. Striker/sad tree. I blame DA for encouraging me into this one.
RK — 04 April at 09:32AM
25. crossing guard/guarding cross
DC — 04 April at 10:15AM
That wasn't the #10 I was thinking of. Alas, my original has a less than strict adherence to spelling on each side. (I claim clemency on the evidence of the first example: landing strip / stripping land :-)
For answer for #3 has the same problem, so now I wondering if it is correct:
gambling house / housing gamble
Rupert — 04 April at 10:19AM
I thought #3 was gaming house/housing game.
Does #10 involve the street with the famous #10?
Rupert — 04 April at 10:25AM
29. Tension limit/Testing riff.
And one with spelling variations
30. Place with swings/pest control.
