Fraternal Twins [BB288-A]
What’s going on? Birdbrain 288-A? All because I’d only just posted a pre-posted Brainer from a few years back, as spotted by dg. (See below.) Hence this week, as a Christmas bonus, you get two puzzles for the price of one. Kinda fitting when you consider this particular poser deals with twins.
So, to unravel this Birdbrain, each clue below has two possible answers, where the letters provided in brackets are interchangeable in the same position. For example, Airless (5-M/F) equals MUSTY and FUSTY. Lengths are also given to make life a little easier – but some of these are tricky. Can you figure out the nine fraternal twins?
- Female bird (3-H/P)
- Insipid (4-L/T)
- Exterminator’s target (4-P/N)
- European nation (7-C/R)
- Bellow (4-Y/H)
- Natter (3-P/K)
- Fastener (5-.M/S)
- Hassled (7-A/U)
- Of the good old days? (8-V/C)
Think of any other doubles that apply, differing by a single letter in the same position? See if we can’t crack them in the Comments.
SOLUTION NEXT WEEK
BB288 SOLUTION: Press, voice, match, music, squeeze, shooting, strong, paint, money.

DA,
Ive done a 'reverse' Birdbrain. (Check the aborted BB)
— 12 December at 08:22PM
Female bird (HEN/PEN)
Exterminator’s target (PEST/NEST)
European nation (ICELAND/IRELAND)

dg — 13 December at 02:37AM

GymBunnies — 13 December at 09:11AM
We have answers for the remaining three, possibly even the intended answers. Here are some hints for the first word in each pair:
2. Insipid (4-L/T): Duck?
8. Hassled (7-A/U): Pottered?
9. Of the good old days? (8-V/C): 'e's got form?
And dg's Caress (3-E/A): Geordie favourite?
And a pair that may be conjoined :
Pen (4-D/O)
What women want (5-I/W)
DA — 13 December at 09:36AM
GymBunnies - just to confirm, your other alias is not GB? Or is that a separate contributor?
Good going on the good old days - a toughie.
A hint for your Pen (4-D/O) = nib/neb
As for What women want....dare we presume to know the answer?
Nib — 13 December at 02:17PM
My name appears to have flown away earlier...
Pinnacle (3- I/O)
Contemptible person (7- D/B)
Prey (4- L/T)
Can anyone 'pen' a cygnet/ cygnus/ signia/ signet/ sign-it related wordplay? I'm bogged.
Penmanship = swan boat/pigboat also fizzled.
Inspired by the 'naggers' Wheel Of Fortune episode of South Park, the below are all *offensive*:
Likely to have bird flu = (5- V/S)
Pressurised with gas = (3- T/W)
Infest middle regions = (5- C/A)
Screws = (7- O/I)
A gender-switching blowie = (6- M/F)
dg — 13 December at 02:51PM
Ruler (4-C/T) or (4-Z/S)
Drink (3-S/T)
Water product (3-W/P)
Day trip (3-E/P)
Contemptible character (4-N/L)
Trap (3-I/E)
Knock (3-C/P)

Member (3-L/P)
dg — 13 December at 02:57PM
Rugged (5-T/R)
dg — 13 December at 02:59PM
Likely to have bird flu = (5- V/S) Asian / avian
DA — 13 December at 03:07PM
A fine freshet. Let's have a crack at these, with the Naggers warning.
(YouTube + South Park + naggers, for those who don't get Nib's reference.)
SPOILER ALERT for those wishing to unravel these solo -
Caress = PET/PAT
Pen = BIRD/BIRO
Pinnacle = TIP/TOP
Contemptible person = B/DASTARD
Prey = MEAT/L (a cute one)
Among the lewder lot, consider AVIAN. Not SOT, as that could almost work...? Um, CRABS - let's move on.
Ruler = T/CZAR
Drink = S/TEA (deft idiom)
Water product = P/WEE
Knock = C/PAN
Member = L/PEG (dg - is there a second member pair to find?)
Readliy sacrificed = LAMB/E
Another = TWO/TOO
Rugged = R/TOUGH
GymBunnies — 13 December at 03:29PM
Hi DA, no, GB is not us, unless they have submitted some genuine genius, in which case we're happy to claim it.
Mrs GymBunnies clued "What women want (5-I/W)", so it must be accurate - I had no idea. You may need assistance too.
dg — 13 December at 05:00PM
one last one:
Loser (4-A/I)
SK — 13 December at 05:08PM
Action, and result (10-C/P)
Nib — 13 December at 09:25PM
Mind stuck in the gutter today.
Loser = Twit / Twat?
Action, and result = Copulation / Population
That took me half an hour! :D (Finding the answer, that is. Wait...)
LETTER CHANGE EACH TIME:
Drain (3- T/S)
Drain (3- A/I)
Drink (3- S/N)
Hurry (3- N/Z)
Joint (3- Z/H)
Footwear (7- S/F)
A beast of burden, castrated male? (2- E/O)
DA — 13 December at 09:44PM
Lemme see...
Drain = S/TAP [and SAP/SIP]
Drink = N/SIP
Hurry = N/ZIP
Joint = Z/HIP (How does zip work here - as in seam?)
Footwear = S/FLIPPER
And EX/OX ;)
Here's a mind bender:
Key work ingredient (8 - A/O)
Nib — 14 December at 03:43AM
A vocation vacation?
SK — 14 December at 07:46AM
Nice sleuthing Nib.
Method of contact (7-E/A)
You get screwed either way (7-O/A)
The source of all truth? (8-E/T)
GymBunnies — 14 December at 07:53AM
Well done, Nib! We couldn't solve it, but stumbled across this one in the process:
Key work ingredient (8 - P/T)
SK — 14 December at 09:36AM
Key work ingredient- aptitude/attitude
DA — 14 December at 09:39AM
Too clever, SK. (I'd been spending breakfast, going TRICKING..PRICKING...SCOOPING...SCOOTING,
and getting nowhere.) A fine example GymBos.
SK — 14 December at 09:54AM
Pricking and scooting at breakfast, DA? Couldn't you just eat cereal like normal folk?
Hint on my 3 above...in each case at least one of the answers involves social contact, or intimacy.
DA — 14 December at 10:08AM
Got one!
Method of contact = MESSAGE/MASSAGE
DA — 14 December at 10:10AM
And SK, I'm guessing the source of all truth is NOT research and restarch.
Where is my morning going?!
SK — 14 December at 10:40AM
Nup. Extra clue...one of the sources of truth is a fairly new (but very, very popular) entry in the vernacular. And the other source of truth can be written either as an 8 letter word, or as a piece of 2X4.
DA — 14 December at 10:56AM
FACEBOOK/FACTBOOK - very contemporary.
SK — 14 December at 11:01AM
Bravo.
One to go- think pleasure v government reform package....
DA — 14 December at 11:04AM
Can't be ELECTION/ERECTION, um...
Mr X — 14 December at 11:04AM
Bonking/Banking
DA — 14 December at 11:06AM
Ah, that would be a reference to The Big Four. Lovely work!
SK — 14 December at 11:07AM
Bingo Mr X!
DA — 14 December at 11:14AM
Pipped by 2 minutes. Well done Mr X.
Good fun, SK.
GymBunnies — 14 December at 12:23PM
These are not easy!
If you want to discover "What women want (5-I/W)" (allegedly), then if you remove the switchable I/W from the solution, you will be left with what women want you to have with your breakfast cereals.
dg — 16 December at 10:01PM
brain/brawn
DA — 17 December at 10:07AM
Brain/brawn....of course. Though maybe 'What women want in men' may have been fairer.
As for bran on cereal, how many more clues did we need?! Great work, dg, and cool trap, GymBunnies.
GymBunnies — 17 December at 12:43PM
Tick - well done dg! We'd almost given up.
Didn't want to be too fair DA as there was also the clue about it being part of a conjoined pair - once you had BIRD I thought BRAIN might come within milliseconds :-)
dg — 17 December at 01:08PM
Given a couple with the tag, GymBunnies, is here on a 'word nerd' site there were some hints :)
