Freak Evades Clan!

Cadel the Conqueror.
Good Evans.
Our Yellow Fellow.
Whatever the headlines tomorrow, the news won’t change. The kid from Katherine will be Australia’s first Tour de France winner, leaving the Schleck brothers in his slipstream. Now the question remains – who can concoct the best clue for CADEL EVANS? Or maybe give a local spin to TOUR DE FRANCE? Best clue wins a drip-dry maillot jaune.

Woohoo!!!
Just watched the time trial replay from SBS. Well done, Cadel. Here are two clues to start the ball (or should it be wheel?) rolling.
This clue is about the tailwind which helped him overcome the Schecks in the time trial. Also, finger-crossed he hasn't used clenbuterol.
Wind saved clean cyclist (5,5)
A reference to his harder days at Silence Lotto where he was worked very hard.

TOUR DE FRANCE: Epic lost, or ran in race?

That probably reads better as-

When are you passing judgment, or are you just yellow?
Chris Little — 29 July at 01:41PM
Am I too late? Here's mine...
Australian hero demolishes the French advance
(remembering "the" can be LES, not just LE)
DA — 29 July at 02:01PM
Welcome both of you. Some decent clues here, though beware of indirect anagrams, Chris. Your thinking is refreshingly devious, but asking the solver to intuit LES - or any word in general - is considered dirty pool. (A little like that Contador's antics.)
And Rob, if the hero laced cocktail, that's a word saved - or did you want Cadel to cop the mojito?
Re judgement, this exercise was more about throwing your beret into the ring. The judging is usually reserved for the weekly Storms, which often entail a clueing element. They run from Tues till latish Thurs - feel free to chime in, if the spirit moves.
Chris Little — 29 July at 02:36PM
Thanks for the critique. It leads me to craft this variant...
Aussie hero's strategic advances overwhelmed the French
Chris Little — 29 July at 02:47PM
And a fun one which is such clunky Franglish it hurts but is still good for a groan...
Les bicyclettes, le motorcade, le vans; le hero du jour?
DA — 29 July at 02:55PM
A single tweak, I reckon Chris, trading 'strategic' with something more mix-y, such as manic or grinding - and that is a gorgeous clue. A likely podium step in most Storms.
Chris Little — 29 July at 03:13PM
Thanks again David. My choice of "strategic" was because of the desire to maintain the military-style surface reading. So, with that in mind, let's try:
Aussie hero's dashing advances overwhelmed the French
because "dashing" suits all three readings - military, cycling, and mix-y anagram indicator.
