Heading into the New Year [BB343]

To celebrate the first day of 2012, each answer to our nine clues below entails two words that can both follow HEAD in a familiar phrase or compound word.
For example, Where Brie is cut, say is cheeseboard (head cheese/head board). So, do you have your head around the pattern? Then head on in.
- Dawn (5,5)
- Telstra connection (5,4)
- Public toilet (8)
- Nation of birth (8)
- Goal attempt from a mark (3,4)
- Nouveau riche (7)
- Gale (6,4)
- Non-short cut (4,3)
- Crime show (4,4)
SOLUTION NEXT WEEK
BB342 SOLUTION: Eel look, school leer, tattoo oodles, tweed doona, reef feel, grappa account, burro offal, Mallee llama, Lille egg. (Other trebles are possible.)

Rather than give away the answers, I propose to demonstrate your solving excellence by cluing the two resultant 'head' phrases for each one you solve. For instance:
1.(a) Dive in... (b) ...and lead the way.
AC — 01 January at 02:39PM
3.(a) In lieu of whiplash (b) Ensure enough of this above
AC — 01 January at 02:48PM
I particularly like this one. Both DA's and my offerings are laden with meaning.
7.(a) Persisted forward despite being... (b) ...impeded, of aircraft perhaps?
AC — 01 January at 02:53PM
8.(a) With haste (b) Progress
AC — 01 January at 03:03PM
And that's about all I can manage right now, so I offer up a number 10 and leave it at that.
10. Minimise attorney's defence (6,4)
SK — 01 January at 08:11PM
Ok, following AC's lead (with a cryptic twist)
6. (a) Lead with a down clue for DA, eh? (b) Having an advantage, blitzes a hard test
Happy New Year to all...
AC — 01 January at 09:22PM
Cheers SK. It was just enough to enlighten me on DA's clue by first realising part (b).
AC — 01 January at 09:41PM
...and I just got your 6(a), SK. All I can say is wow!
This one might be a bit of a stretch, all in the name of uniting each component:
2.(a) Top sound in one ear... (b) ...out the other, perhaps? (and other and other for Herman Cain)
KM — 03 January at 12:53PM
9.(a) Untimely death ordered by pointless reprimand for minor ailment (b) Nutter in bungled DEA chase
AC — 03 January at 02:31PM
Thanks KM, you managed to solve #9, even though this thread has gone cold.
Seeing as how I hadn't solved this one earlier, my offering #10 is half redundant (hopefully the other half does not lurk amongst the answers of 4 and 5 which I haven't solved yet).
Criseyde — 03 January at 04:24PM
4 Instructions for pigeons?
Criseyde — 03 January at 05:06PM
5 Don't know AFL, but guess is: Fly kick.
SK — 03 January at 09:50PM
@Criseyde, I think the answer to 5 is as follows (keeping the clueing theme for a bit of fun)
(a) Commentators need a break in the ads, etc
(b) She had to strip for portrait
AC — 04 January at 09:32AM
Yes, that seems more like it SK.

With the original answers now published by DA, here is the answer to my 10: SHRINK CASE
