Holding the Man

untitled The planets align these next two weeks, with both major football codes staging their finals in sync. And so in salute to this once-only fluke, here’s a puzzle (and minor Storm challenge) to prepare for the big weekends on offer.

Can you figure out the words and phrases below, all of which commit the AFL infringement of holding the man?

Cleaning chore (6), for example, is dusting, as DUSTIN is held, a man of six letters. Just as pecking orders (6) is hierarchies (Archie). Or being more creative, What Friday is?! (6) = near Thursday.

See how many blokes you can muster, with exclamation marks indicating a more liberal approach. And feel free to add more men to the roll-call. (Though with liberal answers, try to be generous in your clues – as these fellas can be treacherous!)

  1. Dock worker (5)

  2. In pain (6)

  3. Artery threat (6)

  4. Messina mirage (6)

  5. Infantile period (5)

  6. 2043 (7)

  7. Widely and randomly yell! (7)

  8. Cooler national song! (6)

9. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 (5)

1. S
3. L

Lost on the rest

Geoff Bailey — 23 September at 01:18PM

Some slightly longer ones:

10. Nazi secret police catalogue shrewish women (10)

11. Travelled by human-drawn carts (8)

12. The smell of an American dissipated (8)

Geoff Bailey — 23 September at 01:25PM

Hmm. Might have needed to add some exclamation marks -- none of them are single-word intermediates, anyway.

Geoff Bailey — 23 September at 01:42PM

1. S
2. M
3. L
4. M
6. N
8. K

DA — 23 September at 01:57PM

You've set the bar high, Geoff.

Cracked your 11 - RODERICK (feel free to blurt answers in this forum), and THE ODOR Ebbs.

While for 10, I've been toying with StASI-LIST-HARidans... Not quite ALISTAIR -

Here's another two:

13. Old Flipper! (8)
14. Paramedic sweep! (8)
15. Spare 24 hours! (7)

Boniface — 23 September at 02:18PM

One of my favourite words:

16. Fatty deposits (6)

DA — 23 September at 02:23PM

Could that be (3)?

Boniface — 23 September at 02:38PM

@ DA - Only as an uncommon shortened form. The word itself is 9 letters.

alee — 23 September at 03:05PM

Apologies in advance for double-ups - I haven't cracked them all yet.

Mine are all footy-themed, whether in the clue or the name to be picked out.

13. Looked quickly (5)
14. Football side where the sun sets? (7)
14. (alt clue - same answer) Bulldogs? (7)
15. Team announced on the radio? (7)

SK — 23 September at 04:04PM

Also a footy reference-

16. Cooked Asian Tigers? (9)

Geoff Bailey — 23 September at 05:38PM

Well done on getting those two, DA. Inspired by your "not-quite" for #10:

21. Contents of Magritte's Le Drapeau Noir! (8)

(Renumbered since alee's entries bring the count to 20.)

And an easier one for a change:

22. Excessively frugal (5)

Alee's 13 looks like gLANCEd to me. Sadly, I've not made any progress on any of the other entries yet.

Geoff Bailey — 23 September at 11:22PM

Figured out DA's 13: Name begins with R, answer begins with V.

Rest still a mystery to me, particularly the football ones.

Em — 24 September at 08:15AM

After re-reading the instructions, I think mine should have exclamation marks. Mine being alee's, that is!

They're multi-wordy-answers. I think my (alee's) 15 is the same name as your 21, Geoff.

Geoff Bailey — 24 September at 11:26AM

EM/alee: Not sure how that could be, unless you meant it to be (8)?

Em — 24 September at 06:09PM

Geoff - seems I am having a dud week. (8) it is. Apologies!

Geoff Bailey — 24 September at 09:04PM

EM: *chuckles* No worries. Then yes, it does seem likely to be the same.

Boniface — 24 September at 11:59PM

I'll give you my answers since things seem to have eased off on this thread:

9. Jason (I could have enumerated all of the months of the year, but hate the numberpad).

16. Xanthomas

Geoff Bailey — 25 September at 12:11AM

Oof. I wasn't remotely close to either of those, Boniface. At least I've learned a new word today. :)

DA tidied up two of mine, but for the record:

10. gestaPO INDEX TERmagants
11. RODE RICKshaws
12. THE ODOR Ebbed (I originally had this as evaporated or evanesced, but ebbed is simpler.)

21. surreALIST AIRcraft
22. parSIMONious

DA — 25 September at 07:54AM

Surrealist aircraft is very streamlined.

The misses on my extra stuff:

14 ambulance/lottery
15 stray/Monday

So what was SK's 16? And did we knock off all of Em's offerings? Any late bids - ?

SK — 25 September at 08:03AM

My 16 was-

Stir-FRIED RICHmond

Em — 25 September at 11:30AM

Football side where the sun sets/Bulldogs:
TeaM AT THE West

Team announced on the radio:
A LIST AIRed

Geoff Bailey — 25 September at 12:36PM

All of which still leaves us with two of DA's originals unsolved. For posterity (or I'm assuming DA can delete this if this is not how things are done, and apologies if so):

1. STEVEdore
2. sMARTINg
3. choLESTERol
4. fata MORGANa
6. erskiNEVILLE (personal favourite, I think)
8. funKIER ANthem

13. veteRAN DOLPHin

Five and seven still as-yet unsolved, or so it seems.

DA2 — 25 September at 12:43PM

5 oral phase
7 scream at the world

Thanks for the recap Geoff. That's perfectly fine, and in fact mighty helpful.
