Last Chance To Clue?

untitled Political lampooners will revel in such a bird as Abbott’s booby, a cousin in the gannet clan, and found flying over waters close to Christmas Island. Though not found easily, as the booby is one of several endangered Australian birds, from the Chestnut-Rumped Heath Wren to the Buff-Breasted Button Quail. And the six birds on this week’s clue list.

As that’s our latest Storm – to dream up inspiring clues for five rare birds that flit around the country. With no need to provide a definition element (unless it helps to balance your creation), can you make some magic with the six flappers listed below?

ANTARCTIC TERN
EMERALD DOVE
GOULDIAN FINCH
MASKED OWL
NIGHT PARROT
TRISTAN ALBATROSS

Best way to present your clues is with the bird’s unique initials as opener, and then your best shot at the wordplay. Here’s my MO for Masked Owl:

MO – Cut grilled inside, close to burnt

Or NP – Heard sir mimic

By 8pm on Thursday, if you can arrange your final flock of six for judging, after a spot of online preening, then I shall look forward to deciding which effort shows the greatest pluck. Good luck. (And best of luck to our six precious species too!)

SK — 31 August at 05:13PM

High quality stuff, Bon. Though I'm a bit jealous that you claimed the "Greenpeace" ground so early...but it was there for the taking ("you snooze, you lose")

RobT — 31 August at 05:44PM

or "You've got to be up to be in"?

SK — 31 August at 06:45PM

Too true RobT. Like a thief in the night.....

And (better late than never) for what it's worth I agree with Sam's vote for your chosen NP and AT. (NP is particularly clever...you spotted the "nigh" before anyone else could get near it...)

RobT — 31 August at 06:52PM

Ta SK. I chose good, then.

Re timing (and I can't help but think Tiger Woods took the golfing term too literally): I saw Baker-Finch by myself but after Boniface!

SK — 31 August at 10:13PM

A final tweak to NP (trying to get a better flow...I'm hooked on the idea of "Brokeback Mountain" as anagrind + ROT, just need to get the fodder happening)

AT: Tenant lost tidy sum with bitter rent dispute
ED: Leave more material to cover ample bust?
GF: Shane Surfboards; part-owned by China conglomerate
MO: Broke law and smoked
NP: Artist rejected straight part in "Brokeback Mountain"
TA: Start in style, three under par?!

SK — 01 September at 07:22AM

Folks, I'm looking for a ruling on a clueing protocol...when removing letters from anagram fodder, if the nominated letters appear in a different order than in the fodder, do you have to "mix" them FIRST before removing, or can it be left unsaid?

eg. Does my NP clue have to be amended to something like-

NP: Flamboyant artist rejected straight part in "Brokeback Mountain"

Anybody know? DA, is there a hard and fast rule?

Sam — 01 September at 08:47AM

There doesn’t seem to be a hard and fast rule SK. In the ‘Loroso Report’ Anax said that it might appear, in moderation, in a paper like the Guardian, but others such as the Independent wouldn’t allow it, even if the letters were in order – so I guess it depends on the editor/style of the paper. I think I like it better without the ‘flamboyant,’ and back Mountain is a lovely way to get ‘rot.’

Mauve — 01 September at 01:26PM

SK — 02 September at 01:27PM

Thanks Sam.

And I know it's past cut-off, and Bon owns the rights to the Baker-Finch theme (quite rightly, and in style), but the following came to mind as a tribute to IBF as former Australian Masters winner, before his (ahem) form slump with the driver and subsequent retirement. Not an official entry then...just for fun-

GF: Turn in gold jacket; Aussie golfer no longer needs the dough, we hear
