Mark Halpin used this mechanism in one of his puzzles recently. (See Fiammetta's puzzle in the 2011 Labor Day Extravaganza on his puzzles page: http://www.markhalpin.com/puzzles/puzzles.html -- he also has some very nice Sondheim-themed crosswords.)
He extended the example, using (ST)ILLNESS. He also appended 'ER' to #4, and I think he might have used a modification of #6, too, although I'm not convinced I have #6 correct so maybe not.
Other examples pulled from that puzzle (could be made more concise, but I leave them as they were):
10. Officially approved / Like a caste system
11. Sprinkled / Laboured
12. A loose-fitting garment / Flashy lighting
13. Curving overhead / Stiffening, in a way
14. A certain soldier or lawman / Outsider
15. Competent / Unfluctuating
16. Some military evacuations / They may aid the mobility-impaired on flights
