Stormathon Clues 4

index Last set of six clues, our Stormathon finale. Unravel what clues you can here, with the forum open for any help, or heroics, so long as you maintain a summer alias to safeguard your ID. As part of the fun is the chance to create your clues for any of these six answers, with the peer pick being a sure bid for prize contention.

Of course, if you wish to give yourself a greater chance of snagging Tim Moorey’s How To Master the Times Crossword, then scramble these solutions’ fourth letters to make a six-letter word. Compose a clue for that word, and submit by 6pm on Friday, along with your three other mystery words from the previous Stormathon sets.

Time to bite the bullet and face your final six:

  1. Carrying on outside with stolen kiss (7)

  2. Vessel contains nearly all of palm oil (8)

  3. Make a deduction of one or less (8)

  4. Single woman accepting a drink? That’s fantastic (9)

  5. Model spouse entertaining Mum, though heart’s not in it (8)

  6. Country left hanging after election? (4)

(So mix your fourth letters to these answers, and there’s your final mystery word. Send the four clues, for the four hidden words, to DA Email before Friday 5pm.)

Aerogard — 15 December at 12:16AM

Um that'll be single woman in 4.

DA2 — 15 December at 05:51AM

Been burnt by a typo....Damn bunge.

Make that 'single' for Clue 4. Will make the change when back at the desk.

Barbie — 15 December at 07:16AM

Could #6 be as simple as a 3 letter abbreviation+L?

Aerogard — 15 December at 07:23AM

@Barbie - no, it's even simpler...

DA — 15 December at 07:23AM

Barbie, I'm shocked. Would I select a clue that's THAT simple? I'll leave you in suspense.

Shark Biscuit — 15 December at 07:24AM

@DA: perhaps also sync the PM deadline please?

Barbie — 15 December at 07:45AM

Is it the other end of the same country?
I'm guessing DA's 'suspense' is a clue for 'hanging'.

Off to work now, by the time I get home all you brilliant people will have untangled the knot.

Mozzie — 15 December at 07:52AM

Don't think too deeply about 6 and you'll get it. Just 3 and 5 to go for me.

Shark Biscuit — 15 December at 08:20AM

I only have alpha and sigma so far.

Aerogard — 15 December at 09:58AM

5 has me stumped at present. Anyone got a tip (I'm prepared to trade!)

Sam — 15 December at 10:05AM

Sorry Aerogard, only have #6...

Mozzie — 15 December at 10:33AM

I've got 5 but not 3. Care to trade hints, Aerogard?

Aerogard — 15 December at 10:38AM

Sure Mozzie: with 3, deduction is the key.

Mozzie — 15 December at 10:41AM

Hmm. I'll think about that in a second. Regarding 5, model is no anagrind, and it's the mum that's heartless. There you go, two hints for the price of one.

Air Conditioning — 15 December at 10:44AM

#6 made me laugh as I was reminded of a How I Met Your Mother episode. Barbie, I suggest revising how you partitioned the words into the clue components.

Aerogard — 15 December at 10:46AM

Thanks Mozzie - I should also mention that the 'of' in 3 is superfluous.

Mozzie — 15 December at 10:46AM

I've got 3 now. All 4 mystery words have such negative associations. Where's the Christmas cheer, DA?

Mozzie — 15 December at 11:25AM

1. Dead buried bearing scripture and returned immortal

Aerogard — 15 December at 12:03PM

1. Ate improperly - renal damage permanent (7)

Mozzie — 15 December at 12:09PM

2. Secretary of defence force details discovery of oil

Sam — 15 December at 12:46PM

How good is #1! Didn't even see the definition - thanks Aerogard and Mozzie (an odd partnership!)

Aerogard — 15 December at 01:11PM

2. Wax and trim cars in carpet (8)

Mozzie — 15 December at 01:15PM

5. Model or flirt with some guy for company

KM — 15 December at 01:16PM

6 took me about half a second, leaving me with what I now realise is a sense of false confidence regarding the remainder...

Mozzie — 15 December at 01:17PM

6. Limits of church aid in Africa

Air Conditioning — 15 December at 01:27PM

Mozzie, I don't have 5 yet, but is your clue a bit of sleight of hand as far as the definition part is concerned? I believe that in the original, 'Model' comprises part of the definition, whereas your definition is at the opposite end of the sentence. Am I on the right track, or completely confused? Let me squirm if it's the latter.

Mozzie — 15 December at 01:32PM

G'day Air Con. If I'm right about 5 (and now you're making me doubt myself), the definition is just model.

Mozzie — 15 December at 01:49PM

Here are my six for this round:

1. Dead buried bearing scripture and returning immortal

2. Secretary of defence force details discovery of oil

3. Low-quality iron cast over raging fire

4. Legendary star gazers hampered by rainy conditions?

5. Model or flirt with some guy for company

6. Limits of church aid in Africa

Air Conditioning — 15 December at 02:09PM

4. I'm a gin-soaked beast of allegory?

Trademark on the opening, but the tail-end might require some tweakage.

Gidget — 15 December at 02:30PM

2. Burning matter of holding back decision (if far apart)

Gidget — 15 December at 02:52PM

1. "Everlasting Love", no.1 after neat re-hash

Gidget — 15 December at 03:09PM

A comment on my emotional state throughout this Smormathon?

4. I'm confused again and really edgy beyond belief

Gidget — 15 December at 03:24PM

3. Cheap undies gather around the edges?

Budgie Smugglers — 15 December at 03:32PM

6. Michael Murray featuring in bleach ad?

Budgie Smugglers — 15 December at 03:32PM

6. Michael Murray featuring in bleach advertisement?

Sam — 15 December at 04:02PM

Share your anxiety Gidget re 4 - nice clue.

Still stuck on 5 - from the hints above guess it is a model, with possibly an 'mm' or 'mr' stuck in there - can someone put me out of my misery?

Mozzie — 15 December at 04:14PM

Sam, it's not a well known word so don't feel bad. It's a 4 letter word for spouse around a 5 letter word for mum with the middle letter missing. (Think of a different meaning for mum.) It's also a French word.

Gidget — 15 December at 04:21PM

Re 6, I can see the answer suggested by other clues offered, but can't see how how the original clue works. I actually had another answer, being a generic term for country (but with the same last letter). Any hints Moz on how it works?

Sam — 15 December at 04:26PM

Thanks Mozzie - would never have got there otherwise.

Gidget, think back to the US Federal Election 2000, especially Florida.

Mozzie — 15 December at 04:26PM

Cast your mind back about 11 years, Gidge, to a particularly contentious election.

Gidget — 15 December at 04:31PM

Ahh yes....the penny drops. Ta.

5. After first marriage, actress Rosanna loses right to model

Gidget — 15 December at 04:49PM

6. It caused electoral storm in a tea-cup!

Or-

6. Country music contains humour

Geoff Bailey — 15 December at 04:59PM

Mozzie: Thanks for that very helpful hint -- I can't see myself having gotten that otherwise. *ticks off new word learned for the day*

Looks like the pattern I thought I saw in the mystery words was an illusion, alas. Bother! (For anyone curious, the first three could be considered to connect to three horsemen.)

Air Conditioning — 15 December at 05:09PM

That was a tough #5. Props to Mozzie for the hint. On with the clueing!

Air Conditioning — 15 December at 05:18PM

Something like...

5. CAD mock-up with matte finish on short queue to begin rendering.

I'll keep working on it.

Air Conditioning — 15 December at 05:35PM

Maybe this could work...

6. High distinction dealt, in California, to Schwarzenegger via the ballot paper.

What could be more appropriate to use than 'dealt'? My first instinct was 'corresponded one to one', but that's a little taut and doesn't quite fit here (it's just my mathematical brain oppressing my thought patterns).

G&T — 15 December at 05:58PM

Some are a bit dodgy, but here goes (can 'right' be an anagrind?):

1: Way back around shortcut lasts forever (7)
2: Seal best part of pain about broken affair (8)
3: Menial dressed finer designer first off (8)
4: May I ring a doubtful friend?! (9)
5: Copyright equate TM? (8)
6: Run out of veg. in Africa (4)

Gidget — 15 December at 07:29PM

In honour of DA's recent coming of age, here's a tribute to baby boomers behaving badly at concerts (with a bit of help form the CENSOR in Stormathon 3)-

2. Dad rapping (not quietly, but very loudly) pi##es off Midnight Oil

Gidget — 15 December at 07:41PM

I'll post now in case I don't get a chance tomorrow-

1. "Everlasting Love" concludes neat re-mix (7)

2. Dad rapping (not quietly, but very loudly) pi##es off Midnight Oil (8)

3. Cheap undies gather around the sides? (8)

4. I'm confused again and really edgy beyond belief (9)

5. After first movie, Rosanna gives up right to model (8)

6. It caused electoral storm in a tea-cup?! (4)

Air Conditioning — 15 December at 07:57PM

I'm going to go out on a limb here and provide my clues with answers attached; the lively forum participants have certainly made clear that they have all the answers by now, and DA decrees that we post clues by 9pm tonight, so it's cutting it short if you haven't resolved them by now.

ETERNAL: The lantern wick burned to produce perpetual energy.

PARAFFIN: Beside each fin, the sound of wax on fibreglass.

INFERIOR: This vena cava caused heart failure?

IMAGINARY: I'm a gin-soaked beast of allegory.

MAQUETTE: CAD mock-up with matte skin on short queue to begin rendering?!

CHAD: The ballot paper dealt out high distinction within California to Schwarzenegger.

Budgie Smugglers — 15 December at 08:38PM

Phew. Didn't think I'd get back online! Some measly offerings to add to the mix:

ETERNAL: Drew's heart and talent mostly becoming in 'Ever After'

IMAGINARY: I'm grainy after first shot? No way!

Budgie Smugglers — 15 December at 08:54PM

ETERNAL: Drew's heart and talent mostly becoming in 'Ever After'

PARAFFIN: Lost half of belongings, I hear, to kerosene?

INFERIOR: Lower Plenty? No
INFERIOR: My clues, perhaps? (Hahaha... I jest. Sort of.)

IMAGINARY: I'm grainy after first shot? No way

MAQUETTE: Tent (without rod) houses a model... and a model... and another model

CHAD: Michael Murray features in bleach advertisement?

Budgie Smugglers — 15 December at 08:58PM

I've never come across 'maquette', so thanks to Air Con for filling in the missing piece!

Air Conditioning — 15 December at 09:13PM

Sure Budgie, but credit lies with the Mozzie for breaking it down for us above. I wonder if that was a new one for DA when he first came across it...

Gidget — 15 December at 09:21PM

ok for completeness, with answers-

1. ETERNAL: "Everlasting Love" concludes neat re-mix

2. PARAFFIN: Dad rapping (not quietly, but very loudly) pi##es off Midnight Oil

3. INFERIOR: Cheap undies gather around the sides?

4. IMAGINARY: I'm confused again and really edgy beyond belief

5. MAQUETTE: After first movie, Rosanna gives up right to model

6. CHAD: It caused electoral storm in a tea-cup?!

Sand in me undies — 15 December at 09:25PM

I don't get these deadlines, especially the last 2. I couldn't get to the Net all day and before I can even inhale #4's deadline's been and gone.

Mozzie — 16 December at 06:53AM

Here are mine with answers alongside:

ETERNAL: Dead buried bearing scripture and returning immortal

PARAFFIN: Secretary of defence force details discovery of oil

INFERIOR: Low-quality iron cast over raging fire

IMAGINARY: Legendary star gazers hampered by rainy conditions?

MAQUETTE: Model or flirt with some guy for company

CHAD: Limits of church aid in Africa

Shark Biscuit — 16 December at 07:45AM

Really sorry I have not participated in #4. Too much going on including an attempt at today's DA...

Anyway, my 4 are on their way to DA.

Air Conditioning — 16 December at 10:09AM

ETERNAL: Perpetual enteral digestion.

G&T — 16 December at 10:21AM

Not sure if any more are coming in – will amend later if they do. Some lovely ideas above, but so far I liked:

1: ETERNAL – Mozzie
2: PARAFFIN – Mozzie with Gidget a close second
3: INFERIOR: Mozzie
4: IMAGINARY – Gidget with Budgie Smugglers a close second
5: MAQUETTE – Air Con (though not sure of all the pieces, but like the ‘matte skin’)
6: CHAD - Mozzie

Aerogard — 16 December at 10:32AM

I'll just get a couple of mine in now. Way busy...

1. Ate improperly - renal damage permanent (7)
2. Wax and trim cars in carpet (8)

Gidget — 16 December at 10:35AM

The deadline and Xmas shopping distractions seem to have cut the field to 5 for this round?

My votes-

ETERNAL: G&T
PARAFFIN: Budgie
INFERIOR: Budgie
IMAGINARY: Moz
MAQUETTE: Budgie
CHAD: AirCon

Air Conditioning — 16 December at 12:21PM

G&T, my MAQUETTE works as an &lit if I've understood the def correctly (first time seeing this word). The CAD refers to 'Computer Aided Design', so my "sculptor" (as per the def of maquette) is taken to be like one you might find working on special effects for a movie production. So when developing a CGI character, the preliminary mock-ups or maquettes are made without skin rendering such as hair and things which involve lots of memory and processing power on the computer.

Air Conditioning — 16 December at 12:24PM

Gidget, thanks for the vote of confidence for my CHAD. To be honest, I still think it can be phrased better. I guess, like me, you got a kick out of the 'dealing out' of the letters HD among CA. Dealing out was the best I could come up with to capture this idea.

G&T — 16 December at 12:52PM

Thanks Air Con, can I suggest a tweak?

CAD mock-up a smaller file in matte skin?

Budgie Smugglers — 16 December at 01:36PM

Sand in me undies, I hear ya. Barely made it meself. I might get with the times and upgrade the shoe phone one of those new-fangled internet phone thingamajiggamers.

And following Air Con's post, thanks to Mozzie for spelling out the wordplay for MAQUETTE.

My votes:

ETERNAL: Gidget then Air Con
PARAFFIN: Mozzie
INFERIOR: Mozzie
IMAGINARY: Gidget for the laugh out loud moment of the round
MAQUETTE: Gidget
CHAD: Mozzie

Gidget — 16 December at 01:38PM

Extra vote....I like Aerogard's ETERNAL

Jim Maxwell — 16 December at 02:13PM

Hope I haven't missed the deadline:

1. Bird found in Nw Guinea town returns endlessly ...
2. ... Then, if far apart (apart), throws up kero
3. Worse, if in error, disorganised rout
4. Mr X is aglitter, trapped in Narnia or Middle Earth feature
5. Draft and ungrammatical report that Scotsman dined
6. Gore's nemesis from Scribby Creek

Jim Maxwell — 16 December at 02:14PM

Hope I haven't missed the deadline:

1. Bird found in Nw Guinea town returns endlessly ...
2. ... Then, if far apart (apart), throws up kero
3. Worse, if in error, disorganised rout
4. Mr X is aglitter, trapped in Narnia or Middle Earth feature
5. Draft and ungrammatical report that Scotsman dined
6. Gore's nemesis from Scrubby Creek

Jim Maxwell — 16 December at 02:20PM

Votes: Mozzie for Inferior, G&T for Maquette and Gidget for Imaginary

Air Conditioning — 16 December at 03:35PM

Hey Budgie, which of my ETERNAL's did you like, I posted a second earlier today.

G&T, I like the idea of your tweak, I take it file doubles as both a queue and the computer storage for the model. I still yearn for more, but will include that idea.

Air Conditioning — 16 December at 03:36PM

Here are my votes:

1. ETERNAL: Have to give love to Gidget (that's wordplay on her clue, not perversion...), but I also like the way that Mozzie captured the spiritual aspect of eternity.

2. PARAFFIN: Budgie's clue was fully equipped with the necessary tools to provide the solution succinctly.

3. INFERIOR: JM's was superior; almost every word could possibly lead to the answer alone.

4. IMAGINARY: The great Gidget. I had first dibs at this application of "I'm", but hers was far better. Incredibly so.

5. MAQUETTE: Without malice to those brave souls who tried (including myself), this one was really a failed draft. I still believe I can do better.

6. CHAD: I want to include Gidget here for a nice &lit, but I don't get the 'storm in a tea-cup' bit. Chalk up one to Gidget's name on account of my ignorance (?). Nonetheless, the Mozzie definitely drew the most blood (for charitable purposes).

Mozzie — 16 December at 03:50PM

My votes for Round 4:

ETERNAL: Aerogard
PARAFFIN: Gidget
INFERIOR: Gidget
IMAGINARY: Gidget
MAQUETTE: Gidget
CHAD: Gidget (made me laugh)

Almost a clean sweep, Gidget. Love your work.

Air Conditioning — 16 December at 04:59PM

Playing on G&T's tweak of my original idea, I've come up with the following. What I didn't like about the tweak was that mock-up was used as a verb, which I don't believe it is. Anyway, this fix fits nicely and I think it's a term that's distinctive to the film-making process.

MAQUETTE: In pre-production, it's a small file with matte skin?!

Cicada — 16 December at 07:59PM

Okay, this was an effort to wade through, let alone think of clues! Hearty congratulations to those who managed to see it through. I have learnt a few more words in the process. I read through the whole wikipedia entry for US federal election 2000, and the last sentence mentioned pregnant chad. I was none the wiser, so clicked on the chad link and found out it's basically a fancy word for confetti. It's been a long week. Here are my gongs:
Eternal- Aerogard
Paraffin - G&T
Inferior - Mozzie
Imaginary - Gidget
Maquette - Gidget
Chad - G&T

DA — 16 December at 09:36PM

Thanks Cicada, and all other 'cryptic bugs' for contributing to such a two-week buzz.

As of now, I have five players who have submitted their mystery-word clues via EMAIL. If you ain't in that number, then please compose and dispatch [with dispatch] before I draw breath and determine a Leg #4 winner, and the end-game conquistador.

(Combined, these calculations will unmask the Stormathon champ, and book winner.)

Needless to add, a huge thanks to all devoted players. With some 400 posts in a rabid fortnight, this has been a fitting finale for 2011.

Gidget — 16 December at 09:47PM

Thanks Mozzie for kind words and thumbs up. And you learn something new every day...had forgotten about the chad-worthy election controversy, and I had no idea what a maquette is.

AirCon, my CHAD &lit unravels as follows...electoral (rather than electrical) storm was a bit of an added pun, to lead into the wordplay part of tea = CHA + cup = D (bra size). A bit of a stretch perhaps but I couldn't resist it ;)

Mr X — 16 December at 09:58PM

Post-contest, just noticed a typo in my 6. It should read:

Gore nemesis from Scrubby Creek.

Barbie — 16 December at 10:05PM

Ah, Gidget, I get it now. Had the tea but not the cup. As Barbie I should have ... EEEE! It's a blonde thing. Brain's fried.
Couldn't keep up the pace, but have enjoyed the beach blanket bingo.

Barbie — 16 December at 10:16PM

Mr X, Chad Morgan?! The sheik from Scrubby Creek. That's brilliant! I think he predates Annette F and Franky A. ( I should clarify, I'm not a Barbie doll, but Barbie Q as in quick.)

Shark Biscuit — 17 December at 07:13AM

6. African beat? Jks...Old music in the round.

Shark Biscuit — 17 December at 07:18AM

4. Grassy knoll shooter makes aim grainy

Shark Biscuit — 17 December at 07:25AM

Paraffin: Spooner pulls leg of Balmain hooker.

Shark Biscuit — 17 December at 07:32AM

MAQUETTE: Result of scaling cliff right away

Shark Biscuit — 17 December at 07:44AM

ETERNAL: Ageless nurse in electric blue outfit

Shark Biscuit — 17 December at 07:48AM

INFERIOR: Glee star goes all Emo for the benefit of the Reverend.

Shark Biscuit — 17 December at 07:48AM

Sorry for my tardiness...thanks DA and all the summer campers.
