Three-Lettered Race
Small is often beautiful, talking mortgages, or crossword clues. And a deft clue, for a short answer, is also a thing to marvel.
That’s your challenge this week. To nominate any three-letter word, and give it a gorgeous clue. Anagrams are obviously off the agenda, but don’t neglect the potential of double meaning, hidden, alternate letters, homophone – and all the other arrows in your quiver.
Use this forum to toss around ideas, and 9pm Thursday (that’s 3 times 3), hand in your best three clues. Come the weekend, I’ll pick the best three overall, and invite you to help launch the People’s Choice debut, selecting the one clue that deserves three cheers.
The entire Storm is inspired by a clue from last week’s Times:
COS: Island in Mediterranean often associated with sin
That’s the best way to file your stuff, with answer then clue. And across the Storm I’ll be submitting other actual crackers for other three-letter solutions. Red? Set? Run!

Maths purists might object to the deliberate capital X,which was the deception. Alternatively:
PLY: Exercise: From the start, subtract 5/8X(the remainder)
Criseyde — 04 October at 09:04AM
SIC: That's what he said when the crook finally left? No good!
IOU: Essex reportedly cancelled the Native Americans' debt.
PLY: Exercise: From the start, subtract 5/8x
ARK: Shipwreck at crowcall.
RM — 04 October at 09:49AM
I'm a maths purist, but I don't object to the capital X because I don't understand the clue!
Mauve — 04 October at 10:18AM
SHY: timid throw
PAT: convenient cash
HIT: best-selling sock
Criseyde — 04 October at 10:20AM
RM Definition or wordplay? Ply your trade etc. It's in the thesaurus. Take the first 5 letters from multiply. I thought that was pretty clever. Should I leave (the remainder) in for extra help and/or deception?
BTW I like your offerings, esp the Van Gogh one.
Mauve — 04 October at 10:26AM
I like it Criseyde. And I think "Exercise: subtract 5/8x" is good enough - without the "from the start"
okra — 04 October at 10:31AM
cay: sounds like a guide for the island
okra — 04 October at 10:42AM
mum: The emu man has the word!
Criseyde — 04 October at 10:47AM
Mauve, thanks for the feedback. So it isn't mandatory to indicate exactly what's deleted? The short version is much punchier but I thought it might be going too far. I can always give you the credit .. if DA rejects it. :)
Like your double defs.
okra — 04 October at 10:47AM
Flu: we hear the bird travelled with a virus
Stig Helson — 04 October at 10:48AM
I have a question about the clue that inspired this challenge - COS: Island in Mediterranean often associated with sin (3).
What are the two parts of the clue? I can see the definition, but the rest of the clue doesn't stand alone, it's missing an object. Unless, of course, the object is the definition part of the clue, which can't be right.
Stig
RM — 04 October at 10:49AM
Thanks, Criseyde, I like it. I agree with Mauve that the shorter version is better (though obviously too hard for me!)
RM — 04 October at 10:50AM
It's trigonometry. sin is an abbreviation for sine, cos is an abbreviation for cosine.
okra — 04 October at 10:56AM
Hex: Don't start the unknown spell
okra — 04 October at 10:58AM
Aim: Am I changing direction?
Stig Helson — 04 October at 11:40AM
@RM "It's trigonometry". sin/sine, cos/cosine are functions, and therefore nouns. "often associated with sin" doesn't lead to a noun, it leads to an adjective. As I said in the previous post, the secondary part of the clue lacks an object.
Stig
Sam — 04 October at 11:54AM
I like your 'shy' Mauve!
JUS: Simply reduce sauce
AWL: Speaker’s nothing but a boring tool
Em — 04 October at 12:02PM
MSO: Drum solo in big band
GAM: (down clue) Group of whales read Cosmo upside-down
DA, forgive the Cosmo borrow - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Or am I suffering from cryptomnesia?
RM — 04 October at 12:05PM
@Stig, I don't agree.
cos is often associated with sin
therefore
"often associated with sin" = cos
Em — 04 October at 12:08PM
FLY: Escape from Louis, perhaps
Em — 04 October at 12:10PM
Tidy:
FLY: Escape Louis, perhaps
RM — 04 October at 12:13PM
@Em: According to Mortein, his name is spelled "Louie"
Stig Helson — 04 October at 12:16PM
@RM It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of language. "often associated with sin" doesn't = cos, just as "running on a track" doesn't = train and "in a kitchen" doesn't = oven.
This clue seems employ the ultimate double-duty, where you need to plug in the answer in order to make sense of the whole thing.

GUN: Expert on spineless penguins
Em — 04 October at 12:20PM
Thanks RM! Third time's a charm - yet another cliche, and yet another tidy:
FLY: Escape Louie, perhaps
Em — 04 October at 12:26PM
CUT: Snip edge of cuticle
— 04 October at 12:41PM
PIP: Knight's associate on playing card
RM — 04 October at 12:52PM
@Stig, I still disagree. I also disagree on what double-duty means. Here's DA's Farifax crossword last weekend:
1A: Momentary lead, if in close match (9)
which is M IF IN in SEAL = SEMIFINAL, i.e. "in" is both indicator and fodder - double duty.
P.S.
Found in kitchen on about May 8th (4)
DA2 — 04 October at 12:53PM
Not for the first time, we may have to agree to disagree. I see your point, but the wit occludes the nicety. It's like saying:
Euro nation often associated with Xmas = turkey (not as droll, but the same quip by association)
As for the reduction rule Criseyde, it's a ticklish topic. Unless (elegantly) stated, a reduction should be one letter only, in the position suggested.
And please provide you sols with clues. Some neat stuff, with brevity usually the true eye-catcher.
ML — 04 October at 12:54PM
IMP: Spirit stored at 145psi?
DA2 — 04 October at 12:57PM
PS and let's keep that semifinal clue off the table, as much as I appreciate the contribution, only because it arguably lacks a container marker.
Besides, I'd rather this forum celebrate invention rather than contention. Let's have some fun here.
RM — 04 October at 01:02PM
@DA: That wasn't intended as an entry, but as an example of double duty for my off topic discussion with Stig. I'm not sure who would have the nerve to enter one of your clues into your competition, but it's not me!
Stig Helson — 04 October at 01:52PM
@DA2 No, wit doesn't excuse poor cluing. Skilful compilers can write witty clues without ignoring fundamental principles of language.
@RM It's the same double-duty - the secondary part of the clue makes no sense with an object that the definition provides.
@RM What's the answer to your clue? "culinary" is too long, and it's the only adjective I can think of that could mean "in the kitchen".
Stig
Stig Helson — 04 October at 01:56PM
@RM Sorry, "with" should read "without"
Stig
RobT — 04 October at 02:11PM
@RM/Stig...I am guessing:
Found in kitchen on about May 8th (4) = MUMS
RM — 04 October at 02:16PM
@Stig: Skilful compilers can write whatever amuses their readers and themselves. They're clues, not definitions.
cos *is* often associated with sin, and my oven *is* found in the kitchen. I find those sufficient statements of equivalence for the purpose of a crossword clue. Maybe you and Bill Clinton should have a chat?
RM — 04 October at 02:19PM
@RobT: It was a direct response to Stig Helson at 12:16PM. He suggested the word and the definition.
Would it help if the clue said May 8th 1945?
RobT — 04 October at 02:22PM
@RM. No worries.
Is this a Ximenean spat...? If so, "no good will come of it..."
RM — 04 October at 02:24PM
@RobT: It seems to be. I'm quitting now before DA kicks us out.
Sam — 04 October at 02:30PM
Not sure which one of these makes more sense (wish it could be ‘printer out of black ink’):
JET: Black ink taken out of printer
JET: Colour printer out of ink?
RobT — 04 October at 02:37PM
@RM: I am going over to quidnunc where the true butt-inskis live.
Sam — 04 October at 03:20PM
Can ‘tip’ be used as a homophone indicator?
URN: Collect tip-jar
Sam — 04 October at 03:20PM
NIX: Duck back in ten?
ML — 04 October at 03:46PM
TIN: Container for outer skin
Stig Helson — 04 October at 03:54PM
@RM "They're clues, not definitions" Oh, right, so how do you work out the answers? How do you know what's amusing the compiler? No definition: not a cryptic clue.
"I find those sufficient statements of equivalence for the purpose of a crossword clue".
Sorry, an adequate definition is the least a solver should expect. It can be fanciful, indirect, or even a little fuzzy, but at all times equivalent in language to the answer.
Stig
Mauve — 04 October at 04:32PM
Stig, are you related to Blakey from On The Buses? There's something there.
DA2 — 04 October at 04:39PM

Some great ideas right across this storm, and with the 3 clue quota many have had to leave quality on the cutting-room floor. Smart move to impose the limit DA!
At the death I was trying to come up with a Get Smart trilogy, but couldn't quite make it stick. Was going to add the following but thought MAX=TOP might be a bit obscure...
TIC: Problem for Control as Max and Ninety-Nine blow operation
Also, it's a pity "Max" magazine never took off, otherwise Max and Ninety-Nine would have been magic :)
DA2 — 07 October at 06:57AM
Missssed by that much, eh SK?
Yeah, I had to do the three-clue quota to streamline voting - mine AND yours. Let me post my pick on the w/end, and then feel free (all players) to pick your own pick for Popular Choice.
DA2 — 08 October at 06:52AM
Look for the results late Saturday - or Sumday AM. Thanks for such a zestful Storm,
