Weather Wraps [BB296]
So much crazy weather lately, the season is ripe to play around with elements. What weather condition, or general forecast, can lie outside each cluster below. HAIL, for one, turns ANDR into HANDRAIL, while the cluster EC can sit inside DAMP to make DECAMP. In each occasion, no mixing is needed, and the cluster remains intact. Just to be clement, I’ve supplied the length of the ultimate you spell. Take a brolly. You may need it.
- DIO (6)
- MEK (7)
- PIES (9)
- OSS (8)
- KIN (7)
- EROO (9)
- UNW (8)
- FI (6)
Care to set us a kindred challenge? Easy enough – just choose the category, and supply the clusters and word lengths – I’m sure well handle the rest.

I like #5 - as the answer can add to the condition.

Bringing it back down to earth:
EC (6)
SAN (7)
EN (6)
GJ (6)
M (6)
RIT (7)
TR (6)
DA — 07 February at 12:39PM
Lovely clue, Sam - and GJ is your giveaway. I won't pounce just yet, giving newcomers a chance to dig in. But it's a neat septet.

XXX WARNING - SPOILER ALERT XXX
For the original set of 8 I think there's 2 adjectives, 1 plural noun and 5 singular nouns (one or two of these 5 may be able to do double duty as plurals)
Mr X — 07 February at 02:07PM
With Sam's list is number 5 edible ( the full 6 letter word, that is) ? And is P (5) another possible member ?
— 07 February at 02:58PM
Thanks DA, and yes, couldn't come up with anything else for GJ. Yes it is Mr X. Is your P(5) a variation of EN(6)?
Sam — 07 February at 02:58PM
that was me above
DA — 07 February at 03:31PM
No category header required:

Sam — 07 February at 05:15PM
DA – if I was an imprisoned religious doctor would I be on the right track?
The next round's on me:
TT (6)
SOM (7)
RO (5)
HE (5)
ONS (8)
ER (8)
TI (8)
DA — 07 February at 05:38PM
For the record, Sam, let's clear up your first [sand]lot:
EC (6) = DIRECT
SAN (7)= PEASANT
EN (6) = SILENT
GJ (6) = LOGJAM
M (6)= HUMMUS
RIT (7) = CLARITY
TR (6)= STRAND
Great list. To be called Buried Alive.

DA - spot on - and your short-list:
EN (4) MEND
ILL (6) PILLOW
ANIN (6) CANINE
XAC (6) EXACTA (which I hadn't heard of before)
E-EC (6) RE-ECHO
ABLE (7) STABLED?
DA — 07 February at 06:03PM
Sam, the tree is wrong which you bark up. Think what else RE-ECHO (which is correct) suggests as a topic.
Sam — 07 February at 06:56PM
ahhh, that's a good one, I thought RHO (apparently your 'right hand opponent' in bridge) was an obscure acronym... so:
EN (4) MENU
ILL (6) CHILLI
ANIN (6) PANINI
XAC (6) EXACTA (which I hadn't heard of before)
E-EC (6) RE-ECHO
ABLE (7) TABLEAU?
— 07 February at 11:02PM
Sam, have managed to solve yours, cheers. Here is my go:
LODH (10)
N (4)
M (4)
ABIA (8)
0-5 (4)
Boniface — 07 February at 11:08PM
That was me...
Sam — 08 February at 09:06AM
Nabbed four of yours Boniface, but stuck on M...
Sam — 08 February at 09:19AM
You might need a crib for this one:
AB (6)
NTE (7)
ESS (5)
RCI (7)
I (4)
EIN (6)
ANDWH (10)
DA — 08 February at 10:19AM
You sure about that last one, Sam? I can only think of HANDWHEEL, which is rare, and (9) anyway...
— 08 February at 10:31AM
On the right track - plural gives you HEELS, as in 'two for his...'
JT — 08 February at 10:42AM
... which implies that Sam's first refers to Indian governors.
Six of a well-known septet:
I (6)
OV (7)
O (5)
AILC (9)
AS (7)
OC (6)
DA — 08 February at 10:50AM
Ah, OK. Now I need to jog the memory of my cribbage stint of yore:
NABOBS [nobs]
PORCINE [pone]
HANDWHEELS [heels]
Um...any veteran peggers out there?
JT — 08 February at 11:25AM
Never played, but an online glossary supplied the rest:
Painter
Gesso
Ruin
Peeing
JT — 08 February at 11:34AM
As for Sam's previous set, about time for spoilers methinks:
Better
Winsome
Groin
Rheum
NO(thin)G springs to mind for the remainder.
Regarding my six, AILC should be the lynchpin.
Sam — 08 February at 12:41PM
JT - your six sinners:
I (6) WRAITH
OV (7)PROVIDE
O (5) ENVOY
AILC (9) SAILCLOTH
AS (7)GREASED
OC (6)LOCUST
Boniface — 08 February at 05:37PM
Sam my M was COMP, nearly a repeat of the first owing to a shallow pool...
Sam — 08 February at 07:26PM
ah, was wondering - liked 50-50!
DA — 09 February at 04:48PM
PS Sam - your 'earth' creation is so neat, do you mind if I run the list as a Wordwit in March? Will give you full credit of course, applauding a solver called Sam.
Please let me know if that's OK.
Sam — 09 February at 10:40PM
DA - sure, would be chuffed, Cheers, Sam.
