Word of the Week: Anagnorisis

ANAGNORISIS [an-ag-NOR-uh-sis] – pivotal moment when a character twigs to their own true identity, and sees the reality of thier situation [From Greek: again + make known] Shakespeare comedies hinge on extravagant anagnorises.

No gain arises when avoiding Eastern construct of self-realisation.

Rossi in the rear after brief jumble on the grid. Indicator of sudden insight into his own fate?

RobT — 02 January at 08:52AM

Butcher sings arias on dawning?

RobT — 02 January at 09:10AM

Abashed Signora hides within Spain in odd new circumstance of discovery.

Criseyde — 02 January at 09:49AM

Tweak: forgot the anagrind

Rossi in crash after jumble on the grid. Brief glimpse of reality.

Like your butcher's enlightenment RobT but I think he might sing only one aria. Bravo!

My father, a butcher, would love your clue. He used to do just that at first light.. a butchered version of O Solo Mio .. and he wondered why?

AC — 02 January at 10:30AM

I wonder if I can interpret the word in such a sense; the def is at the end.

Finally opened iris and cooked with gas in first time AD to propagate plot.

A horse with no knight returning is a sign of harsh reality

SK — 02 January at 10:43AM

Or-

A horse with no knight returning is a sign of his fate

RobT — 02 January at 11:39AM

Butcher sings aria on dawning.

Thanks Criseyde. I can't count.

RobT — 02 January at 11:51AM

Sangria is no ground for reality punch!

RobT — 02 January at 12:02PM

Signorinas given a party for Epiphany

DA — 02 January at 12:18PM

Elegant charade (with reverse tweak), SK.

While RobT's dawn butcher - with aria singular - is also very neat.

Mind you Rob, swapping 'party' in your latest tack with better anaginds - bash, waltz, crowning - would be heavenly. Epiphany as a definition is a fine mislead.

RobT — 02 January at 12:23PM

Reality bite neither a goad nor goddess!

RobT — 02 January at 12:25PM

Signoritas take a break for Epiphany

Huzzah! Thanks DA.

Lr — 02 January at 01:50PM

Critical part of play to manage offsides (or is sin binned) (11)

Happy new year all!

DA — 02 January at 02:02PM

Lr [sic?] - if we are happy with binned as signpost, then your clue is gorgeous.

Trashed, fine. Binned? I know it matches the 'match motif' divinely, but...

Still love it. Great setup.

JPR — 02 January at 06:26PM

Noir sags in a weird 'who am I' moment

LR — 02 January at 06:27PM

I like it RK.

As for binned - yeah, perhaps more of a subtraction signpost in hindsight. Wanted to use 'fouled' to fit the sporting theme, but couldn't quite work it in.

Identity revelation -- Ringo is Santa (sending the head spinning!)

DA — 02 January at 07:23PM

After a quality morning, RK waltzes into the forum and steals the WOW lollies, with a wow. A brilliant clue.

JPR — 02 January at 07:34PM

Identity dramatically twigged: Doctor No is Lara Bingle's bell-hop!

JPR — 02 January at 07:36PM

jeez it hasnt even been a day yet DA!

Boniface — 02 January at 07:38PM

Yes nice one RK, I won't bother with this wow having seen that.

RK — 02 January at 07:42PM

Gee whiz guys. And there was I thinking it was a bit clunky.

DA2 — 02 January at 08:53PM

@JPR. It's not about time but calibre. An early call, true, but I'd be agog if we can trump it. Hence my trumpeting.

SK — 02 January at 09:14PM

Ditto re RK's offering. Genius...

A signorina's temper - a moment of high drama (11)

JPR — 03 January at 08:47AM

okeydokey DA, you be agog and I'll be a magog.... it's cool......altho the sense of a race with WOW is I think a bit unhelpful.. can they not be mulled over for a few days? instant gratification can be overrated (?)

DA — 03 January at 09:10AM

WOW is a casual thing, JPR. Often the forum will run for days without a winner being declared. Or as happened this week, a gem is cut before your eyes - and I felt compelled to commend it.

Also helps - perhaps - that I'm at my desk this week, vs the usual studio scurry of the last 5 months. (Maybe when I'm taking a break in late Jan, the merry, unranked simmer will resume!)

JPR — 03 January at 10:20AM

Thanks DA, that's fine. You do a fantastic job on so many fronts, not least brightening up one's Melburnian Saturday, cheers!

One Wheel — 03 January at 11:37AM

Or darkening it for people that can't complete the puzzle...

JPR — 03 January at 12:55PM

not so, for me at least the brightening usually continues *at least* thru Sunday, Monday, Tuesday...usw.. as Ive suggested I think the suspension of time with a good cryptic (working on the puzzle for as long as it takes ... usually!) is an antidote to instant grat culture isnt it?. something about honouring the craft? sounding like grumpy old men ... I recall a sign up that mountain behind Queenstown NZ, top of cable car, about hang-gliding or bungee-something 'the biggest thrill of your life ever and back to Queenstown by lunchtime' ... what to do in the afternoon!?

Timbo — 03 January at 01:50PM

JPR - I agree with taking your time over it. Mid week revelations can open it up. For a non-google solver, sometimes you need to give it some time to emerge.

Criseyde — 03 January at 02:19PM

I wholly agree about taking time to savour things and ideas to gel. But I'm happy for DA or anyone to jump in and acknowledge a gem which otherwise this lesser mortal, for one, may have missed. If it was about competition I'd never dare to play in such company.
