Word of the Week: Etaoin Shrdlu

ETAOIN SHRLDU – [???] – sequence created by the two left-hand columns of Linotype keys, used by typesetters to signal copy error. [1930s journo slang] Subbies often missed seeing the etaoin shrldu warning, thus allowing the gobbledygook to run to press.

Shambolic lines authored using common type of letters.

Line marker eating tacky bottomless doughnut binned in notorious Lush Rd.

Test text: Shoulder aint broken.

Criseyde — 28 November at 08:06AM

Like the cricket reference, but strictly speaking it's not a test. Tweak of def:

Error in text message: Shoulder aint broken.

Crude, lurid tone has highlighted character flaw

A gem, RobT - love the d'oh discovery.

SK — 28 November at 11:34PM

No logic to Herald in U.S. version?!

SK — 28 November at 11:45PM

Sail round the rocks and make sure not to copy error

DA — 29 November at 06:44AM

Sweet anagram, that last one SK - though you may be taking a creative leap to imply our ETAOIN SHRDLU is a verb, as the definition element reads.

(The other Herald tack seems to open the way to cosy &lit with a bit more deep-tissue massaging.)

SK — 29 November at 07:17AM

Agree DA....both need work. I was trying to work a clue around "Stuffed copy (def) of Herald into...." but ran out of time and brain cells.

Boniface — 29 November at 02:57PM

Hack should retain poor copy (6,6)

DA2 — 29 November at 04:07PM

We have a winner. That clue reads beautifully, Bon.

Boniface — 29 November at 04:22PM

Cheers DA - one for your journo students!
