Spanish river runs west, covered in filth - it's a charming thing (8)

Its pages are littered with bad spelling (8)
RM — 22 August at 05:06AM
I'm into casting gorier spells, but only on paper

Mimi Rogers performs without S&M manual.
Criseyde — 22 August at 07:18AM
Black magic book found in cursed French river? Not sinister.
RobT — 22 August at 07:38AM
Textbook sulky fit ring-in.

Turn around; limit anger that used to bring out demons

A book of black content, black outlook and almost black colour
Nib — 22 August at 10:40AM
Reminds me of the Wicked Witch Of The West and her "Grimmerie" in the Wicked book series ('grimoire/gramarye'.)
Gregory Maguire is making a grey mug disappear with spellbook.
Nib — 22 August at 10:49AM
Ah, surplus S...
Gregory Maguire adds eye, a grey mug disappearing with spellbook.
Em — 22 August at 04:12PM
Quck tidy (it's my thang):
A book of black content, black outlook and black colour (almost)
Still not sure though... suggestions welcome.
Em — 22 August at 04:12PM
(But no need to suggest spelling 'quick' correctly. Way ahead of you.)
RobT — 22 August at 04:18PM
@Podi-Em.
I would be thinking the anglicised black would be "noir" so sans "e", although "noire" is the female form.
DA is a pedant, as are we all.
SK — 22 August at 04:34PM
Harry, Hagrid, Hermione had hen sacrificed in the Hogwarts library? (8)
DC — 22 August at 05:09PM
@SK, very neat indeed. I reckon you could put an 'and' after Hagrid to make it read better.
RobT — 22 August at 05:51PM
Witchcraft requires rerig, IMO.
DA2 — 22 August at 06:06PM
That's devilish, SK - excelsior Maximus.
Re your clue Em, there's something really snazzy in your discovery. Not sure if outlook translates as exterior, esp since black as grime is a push too. The other if is that almost almost always suggests a paring to the tail, not head.
Harsh, I know. But your epiphany is well worth honouring in a redraft. Any offerings - grime/noir/black? It's a golden clue trying to emerge.
RobT — 22 August at 06:32PM
DA2: the rest of us are chopped livre? ;)
SK — 22 August at 07:39PM
Thanks DC & DA. And you're right...an "and" improves it without detracting from the fodder.
Was trying to craft a full alliteration clue (hacked instead of sacrificed perhaps?) but couldn't make the end bits come together. Which is a pity coz I like the idea given there is no hint of an "h" in the answer!
Em — 22 August at 09:16PM
Thanks RobT and DA. Appreciate the comments and feedback - I'm new to this clue-crafting caper so find them anything but 'harsh' (although I'll accept 'snazzy' anytime).
Back to the drawing board to see if I can get this 'black' tack on the right track.
Don't think I can top Hogwarts though. Bravo SK.
RobT — 22 August at 09:27PM
"Heavens to Mergatroid? A tad less”, I added, vexed.
RobT — 22 August at 09:32PM
Mmmm...I reconsider:
"Not 'Heavens to Mergatroid!' A tad less”, I added, vexed.
Hard work, hey Em.
SK — 22 August at 11:38PM
@Em, your black theme is a beauty, but it's a tough one to finish off. I'm thinking black state (grim), black hole (nothing), black mood (ire), but can't connect it.
On another (less tasteful) tack-
Black (magic) legend appears here, or I perform in dirty film (8)
Em — 23 August at 08:27AM
A book of black content, black outlook... oh, and black rage
Dark book made the Reaper cry, I hear
SK — 23 August at 09:27AM
@Em...nice.

Black magic book -- guess reader is beginning a pattern of interference!
RobT — 24 August at 07:58AM
Hair-raising, gruesome rag hands in a scrapbook.
RobT — 24 August at 08:34AM
Aaaarg. The 'D'.
I shamefacedly withdraw my prior entry and replace with something similar:
Gruesome hair-raising hags insure a clean spellbook. (7)
dg — 24 August at 12:25PM
Nasty growth on lip not seen on charmers?
(A goitre's a nasty growth, yes?)
Criseyde — 24 August at 07:57PM
dg, if I may be so bold as to suggest as a tweak:
Throaty growth not covering mouth charms.
(like the goitre and rim and especially the 'not' but should it follow the growth?)
dg — 24 August at 08:34PM
Thanx for the advice, Criseyde. Im happy with the 'NOT' placement. (GOITRE -> G RIM OITRE -> GRIMOITRE no T -> GRIMOIRE)
wHAT do others think?
RobT — 24 August at 08:47PM
Criseyde, were you going to add some comments re my crossword effort in the other place? :)
