Word of the Week: Idli
IDLI [idly] – savoury cake of Southern India of fermented black lentils and rice [Deriving form Tamil verbs to put down slowly, and to steam] No Goa breakfast is complete without an idli smothered in sambar, or mango chutney.

Very nice def RobT.
Dili massacre took the cake
JD — 05 December at 08:04AM
I'd like to consume a lentil pattie.
DA — 05 December at 08:05AM
Ouch, in a good way, SK.
Work with me here:
Palming sides off Indian cake?
Too screwy, I'd say.

Down clue:
Lentil dish pancake from the south.
Criseyde — 05 December at 08:17AM
Dare I, can I?
Lentil dish pancake from the south?!
DA — 05 December at 08:21AM
To perfect a lovely idea, Criseyde, you'll need to include a hidden signpost. Hence:
Lentil dish serving from the south?!
That's a gem, and it's 99% yours.
Criseyde — 05 December at 08:29AM
Yes, I had your version first, DA, but I thought pancake could work as the hidden signpost as well as part of the def.
DA — 05 December at 08:41AM
Cake can almost work as a hidden (the letters set together), though pancake loses that duplicity, I reckon.
(If you had the 'serving' draft on your notepad, then the gem is 100% yours.)
SK — 05 December at 08:42AM
For starters, Indian dish looks irresistable!
Criseyde — 05 December at 08:44AM
Thanks DA and ditto for the 'cake'.

Bridling centre-half takes the cake
RobT — 06 December at 11:12AM
Take back that bit of gilding between two extremes...it takes the cake!
Em — 06 December at 12:36PM
I lied about taking the drug 'cake'
DA — 06 December at 12:41PM
Something weird going on at the moment, with the last few posts (via Em and RobT) being duplicated. May need to look into things. (Sorry for the odd echo..echo..echo...)
Em — 06 December at 12:49PM
Don't fret on my behalf DA - I thought my computer had frozen and hit 'post' again to check. No ghosts in the machine.
RobT — 06 December at 01:26PM
My bad DA.
