Bard-o-Rama
24 April, 2013
For those who caught The Project last night, you’ll know I’ve been awash in Shakespeare words this last while. And boy was the Bard prolific. Most of us know about his phrases – from All’s well to Yeoman Service – but his one-word coinages are staggering. A quick A-to-Z in shorthand:
accommodation – belongings – comply – disgraceful – employer – fashionable – gallantry – hurry – impartial – juiced – lacklustre – mimic – noiseless – overview – perplex – quarrelsome – rant – stealthy – traditional – unclog – varied – well-read – yelping
If the playwright didn’t invent them, he’s the first cited user. The man was a turbine of terms – or a termine, my new word which won’t catch on.
Though he didn’t always get it right. Check out these six flops, and feel free to contrive clues for any that appeal:
allycholly – maudlin
bawcock – man
fap – tipsy
potato finger – penis
trunkwork – sex
vastidity – largeness
Look for our prize-Storm commencing on Friday.
