At the risk of betraying a Wordwit puzzle soon to lob in the Herald (look away now if you don’t wish to know the solution), I was struck by the lovely fluke of IMPEL. As soon as you add an F to its tail, you spell two adjacent synonyms: IMP & ELF.
Quick question: what other word can you extend by a single letter (at the head or tail) to give a synonym pairing? Tell us in puzzle form – by saying what letter is added. Though I don’t expect many responses as I think this is a delectable rarity.
